Music at St Clement's

St Clement's is continuing to develop a rich music community, and is home to a friendly and growing volunteer choir which supports regular worship at the church. The choir sings most Sunday mornings with repertoire ranging from the 16th to 21st centuries. They can also be heard at festival choral services throughout the year, about once a month, sometimes in collaboration with guest choirs or instrumentalists, and are led by our Director of Music, Mr Karol Jaworski.

Other aspects of our musical life include a monthly Taizé service (led by a group of singers and instrumentalists), and the popular Lunchtime Recitals at St Clement's series on Saturdays, which showcase a range of soloists and chamber ensembles. In 2018, the church became home to an exciting new chamber orchestra, The St Clement's Players. For more information about our musical life, please contact Karol via email at: stclementscambridge+music@gmail.com.

Choir and organ

The choir usually meets twice a week: a mid-week rehearsal and a Sunday service, occassionally meeting at other times for additional services around festivals and feasts, or for social meetings. Current weekly commitments are:
 - Tuesday evening rehearsal, 7.30-9.00pm
 - Sunday morning rehearsal 10.15-10.45am ahead of Communion 11.00-12.15pm
There are occasional mid-week or Sunday evening services (c. once per month) which are advertised in advance.
Broader choir projects have included successful choir tours, collaborations with other choirs or instrumental ensembles, as well as participation in a number of workshops or festivals.

We have a limited number of vacancies across all voice parts in the choir. Our choir director, Mr Karol Jaworski, welcomes enqueries from all interested in singing regardless of previous experience - please do get in touch for more information or to come and observe one of our rehearsals. The choir is accompanied by a rota of experienced organists (and occassionally instrumentalists too), and we welcome inquiries from anyone who may wish to play with us.

St Clement's houses a fine one-manual organ, though in need of significant overhaul and redevelopment, full specifications of which may be found here. We also own a baby grand piano that is used at Taizé services and in our recitals, and a digital piano used for choir rehearsals.

Concerts and recitals

Located in the centre of Cambridge, St Clement's is an excellent venue for recitals or concerts. In July 2017 we experimented with a regular Saturday lunchtime recital series that has proved popular and has quickly grown to become a permanent feature of our musical life and even resulted in the birth of a new chamber orchestra. We are now excited to regularly host talented soloists and ensembles from Cambridgeshire and London, performing to appreciative and welcoming audiences. If you are interested in performing at St Clement's, please do get in touch with our Director of Music, Karol, who will be happy to advise further.

St Clement's is also increasingly popular as a venue for evening rehearsals and other activities. With movable pews and staging, and recently installed kitchen and washroom facilities, we are a flexible venue right in the heart of Cambridge. We welcome all enquiries about using our space, which can be directed to our churchwardens.
